POLICE in Cape Town are hunting for killers following the brutal murder of two Sasko bread workers on Thursday morning, 16 May.

The incident left the whole kasi shocked, and many people believe the killing could be protection fee extortion related.

A video trending on social media shows three men sitting inside a stationary bakery van counting cash.

At first, one man is seen approaching the passenger window but quickly leaves.

Shortly, a gunman approaches the driver’s side, pointing a firearm at the driver.

The driver is seen handing over a bundle of cash to the gunman, but the gunman appears to demand more.

On the passenger side of the van, another man was also collecting money from the other two workers.

Immediately after getting the money, the gunman started firing shots randomly at the workers. The driver and one of the colleagues died from injuries.

Many people on social media have been asking why the workers had to be killed after money was taken.

A Delft community leader who spoke to Daily Sun said the incident is likely related to extortion.

“They didn’t want money but to send a message to others that if you want to enter Delft, you need to pay money to them. Extortionists are growing rampant in this kasi,” he said.

Daily Sun approached the Community Police Forum's Reginald Maart for a comment, but he declined our request.

However, he mentioned that as community leaders, they often become targets after speaking to the media. Therefore, he chose not to speak out for the sake of his own safety.

Delft police spokesman Sergeant Bilqis Poole confirmed the incident, which he said is under investigation.

“Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Thursday morning, 16 May 2024, on the corner of Delft Main Road and Symphony Way, Delft, where two adult males were shot and fatally wounded are under investigation.

“Delft police responded to a complaint of a shooting, and upon arrival on the scene, they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies in the vehicle they were travelling in. Both victims were declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. Motive for the attack forms part of a police investigation. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Poole.

He added that Delft detectives are investigating two counts of murder. Poole urged anyone with information about the shooting incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
