Fitness, baby to cut short Faf's England tour?

Cape Town - Star Proteas batsman Faf du Plessis might not feature in the two warm-up matches leading up to the Proteas' demanding tour of the UK and ICC Champions Trophy.

Du Plessis has a slight niggle in his right shoulder and the Proteas will be monitoring his fitness.

The Proteas Test and T20 skipper featured in only two games this IPL season for the Rising Pune Supergiant and only played a single innings (scoring 8).

"The only guy that is carrying an injury in the 15-man squad is Faf," Proteas team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee told the media on Tuesday.

The Proteas are hopeful that Du Plessis will be ready for the opening match of the three ODIs against England, which begins at Leeds on Wednesday, May 24.

"A plan is in place to have him ready for the first ODI against England," said Moosajee.

"We are not sure about the warm-up games yet, we'll probably assess (his injury) once we get to the UK and take it from there."

There's a possibility at some point during the tour that Du Plessis will return home to be present for the birth of his first child.

Du Plessis confirmed on Saturday that his wife, Imari, was 32 weeks pregnant. All going according to plan, 40 weeks would fall slap bang in the middle of the first Test at Lord's.

"I would like to be there for the birth of my first child so hopefully the timing works well with this tour," said Du Plessis.
