Markram eager to lead from the front

Cape Town - Aiden Markram said he is "humbled" by the opportunity to captain South Africa 'A' on their tour against the England Lions.

Markram, 22, earned his debut SA 'A' call-up after an impressive breakthrough season for the Titans.

Markram was appointed as captain for the SA 'A' four-day squad for the tour in June.

Markram led the SA Under-19 side at the 2014 ICC Junior World Cup final when they defeated Pakistan by six wickets to clinch their maiden trophy

"It's a big blessing and quite humbling to be announced as captain, but it's going to be a great opportunity to rub shoulders with senior players and experienced cricketers like Dale Steyn," Markram told the Titans' Facebook page.

"I'm not going to demand too much, especially being such a young guy. They probably know a bit more than me, but it's a unique opportunity.

"I'm going to try to lead from the front with my performance and just engage with them and adapt to various situations in the game.

"Going forward into this series I can look back on my time at (captaining SA Under-19) and I look forward to the challenge of leading the side (in June) and for what lies ahead."

The Titans opener scored 565 runs at an average of 51.36 - including two hundreds - in the Sunfoil Series, a season which culminated in a record-breaking man-of-the-match performance of 161 off 123 balls in the One-Day Cup final.

Proteas fast bowler Steyn will return to action after a lengthy shoulder injury, and has been selected for the four-day squad as he continues to make encouraging progress to full match fitness.

The SA 'A' tour to England begins with four-day practice games against Hampshire (June 8-11) and Sussex (June 14-17).

The first 'A' Test against the England Lions begins on June 21 at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, Canterbury.
