Philander's rehab on track

Cape Town - Proteas all-rounder Vernon Philander is on track with his rehabilitation after suffering an injury in England last week.

Philander returned home after sustaining a groin injury during Sussex's County Championship match against Kent at Hove, which prevented him from bowling partly in the first innings and completely in the second.

The all-rounder is expected to be out of action for a period of two to three weeks.

Philander returned to Cape Town last week for rest, recovery and rehabilitation in consultation with Cricket South Africa.

On Monday, Sussex gave an update on Philander's rehabilitation and reported that the all-rounder is "progressing and is on course to return to Sussex for the remainder of his contract".

He is due to return to Sussex in time for the next County Championship match against Durham which begins on Sunday, May 21.

"We are pleased with the news that Vernon is on course to re-join us for the re-commencement of the Championship," Sussex’s Director of Cricket Keith Greenfield told the county's official website.

"Despite the disappointing start in the four-day campaign, we are actively working to bolster the ranks with a replacement for him in the Royal London One-Day Cup, and we hope to be able to confirm shortly."

Sussex are working hard to obtain a replacement for the Royal London One-Day Cup group stages, and are currently in the latter stages of negotiations.

Philander was not selected in the Proteas squad for the ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy starting in June.

However, he is expected to be available for the four-Test series in England starting on July 6 at Lord's.
