De Bruyn ton fails to save Knights from defeat

Cape Town - Theunis de Bruyn struck his first century of the season but it was not enough as the Knights fell to a first Sunfoil Series loss of the season when they went down by 107 runs to the Warriors at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

The visiting captain, who had already hit three half-centuries for his side, made 108 (210 balls, 17 fours) as the Central franchise were dismissed for 289 in pursuit of a 397 victory target.

Basheer Walters and Anrich Nortje were the chief tormentors for the away team, sharing seven wickets between them.

Fast bowler Nortje completed a memorable third franchise game for the Eastern Cape side with 3/54 in 19.4 overs to go with his career-best 6/44 in the first innings. That gave him a match-haul of 9/98.

Seamer Walters was the best of the bowlers in the second innings with 4/85, including the key wicket of De Bruyn, who hit his sixth first-class ton.

But he lacked substantial support after four other batsmen made 25 or more without failing to kick on.

In the end, the Warriors were able to dismiss the Knights a little after tea and in 91.4 overs.

They walked away with 18.2 points compared to the visitors’ 5.58 and joined four other teams with two wins from their first five games as a log-jam begins to develop at the summit.
