Cape Town - Mbulelo Budaza took four wickets to give the Knights the advantage after day two of their Sunfoil Series clash against the Cape Cobras at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.
The fast bowler ended with 4/45 as the hosts bowled out their visitors for 241, before then reaching stumps on 69/3 – a lead of 170.
For the visitors, who began the day on 22/0, there was plenty of promise with the bat, but little support for the three men that did get amongst the runs as Budaza led an impressive bowling display.
Opener Matthew Kleinveldt made 47 and shared in an opening stand of 52, before Stiaan van Zyl carried them for most of the way with his 83 (123 balls, 11 fours). The left-hander was assured for most of his stay in the middle, sharing in one substantial stand of 85 for the sixth wicket with Aviwe Mgijima, who made 50 (113 balls, 5 fours).
But the trio apart, wickets fell far too regularly for the Cobras as Shadley van Schalkwyk (2/35) and Duanne Olivier (2/39) helped Budaza chip away.
In the end, the visitors were dismissed in 78 overs and conceded a first-innings lead of 101.
Dane Paterson (2/34) and Beuran Hendricks (1/20) did reduce the Knights to 43/3, including the former removing key man and captain Theunis de Bruyn for 16. But Pite van Biljon (21) and Rudi Second (14) steadied things with an unbroken 26-run stand to keep the hosts in control.
