Petersen carries Lions hopes

Potchefstroom - Alviro Petersen marked his return from injury with a vital century that kept the Highveld Lions in their top-of-the-table clash against the Titans at Senwes Park on Friday.

The former Proteas opener, batting at number four, struck 172 not out from a total of 255 for nine on another rain-affected day in Potchefstroom.

After 11 overs were lost on day one, a few more had to be surrendered on day two, although the game progressed substantially - the hosts moving to within 39 of the visitors' first-innings 294.

That was all thanks to Petersen's 219-ball vigil, which included 29 fours and a six during a lengthy session in the middle that almost lasted the entire day. It was his 39th first-class ton.

There was little support from his team-mates - only three other in Rassie van der Dussen (13), Dwaine Pretorius (10) and Eddie Leie (17) reaching double figures.

Petersen still managed to add 53 with opener Van der Dussen, 70 with Leie and an unbroken 40 with last man Pumelela Matshikwe (five).

Marchant de Lange was the pick of the bowlers with three for 41.

All-rounder Dwaine Pretorius had earlier started the day well for the Lions by picking up two of the last three wickets as the Titans slipped from their 285 for seven overnight to 294 all out.

Only nine were added for the last three wickets, Pretorius ending with a career-best haul of six for 66. Hardus Viljoen bagged three for 80.
