Cape Town - Daryn Smit was closing in on a century in his final appearance for the Dolphins as they fought back late against the Cape Cobras on day two of their Sunfoil Series clash at Kingsmead in Durban on Friday.
The 33-year-old, who has spent 14 seasons at the KwaZulu-Natal franchise and is leaving for England at the end of the season, was unbeaten on 95 (175 balls, 9 fours) at stumps, although his team was still in a fair bit of trouble on 237/6 at the halfway stage of the contest.
That left them still trailing by 144 runs, although things could have been far worse after they had slumped to 88/5 prior to Smit’s heroics.
Rory Kleinveldt (2/41) ripped through the top order, while Lizaad Williams (2/52) and Jason Smith (2/37) were also amongst the wickets to leave the homes side in trouble after the hosts had extended their overnight 298/6 to 381 all out.
Aviwe Mgijima had been the main tormentor for the visitors down the order thanks to his blistering 52 (41 balls, 6 fours, 1 six).
This despite Senuran Muthusamy returning his maiden five-for in first-class cricket as he ended with a best-ever 5/67.
The rookie Dolphins opener then fell for a duck as the home side slipped into huge trouble, before Smit and Calvin Savage (40) shared in a 115-run sixth wicket partnership to keep the hosts in the game.
When play ended a few overs early due to bad light, Robbie Frylinck (20) was keeping Smit for company in an unbroken 34-run stand.
