Indy pole sitter Dixon robbed at gunpoint at Taco Bell

Chicago - Indianapolis 500 pole sitter Scott Dixon and former driver Dario Franchitti were held up at gunpoint in a late-night robbery at a fast food restaurant, police confirmed on Monday.

New Zealander Dixon was with wife Emma Davies-Dixon and Franchitti at a Taco Bell restaurant late on Sunday near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where hours earlier Dixon had clinched pole for the Indy 500.

Police in Indianapolis said two teenagers aged 14 and 15 had been held in connection with the robbery in which credit cards and personal valuables were stolen. Both teenagers have been charged with robbery.

Dixon and Franchitti declined to comment to reporters on Monday when asked about the incident. IndyCar driver Tony Kanaan said Dixon had been making a fast food dash for a number of drivers, according to reports.

"While they were ordering with their windows down two guys approached at gun point, they held a gun at Dixon's head and asked him for his wallet and his phone," Kanaan told The Indianapolis Star.

"You don't expect that to happen, especially here."

Dixon will start on the pole for the third time in Sunday's Indy 500 as he aims to repeat his 2008 victory at the famous oval.

Franchitti, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, retired following a crash at the 2013 IndyCar race in Houston which left him with multiple fractures including a broken back and right ankle.

Dixon's team owner Chip Ganassi meanwhile joked about Sunday's robbery in a post on Twitter: "There goes that Taco Bell sponsorship we were working on I guess."
