Cotter emotional after Scotland send-off

Cape Town - With a quiver in his voice Scotland head coach Vern Cotter thanked his side and the public after Saturday's comprehensive defeat over Italy.

Scotland ran in four tries and kept Italy out for a 29-0 victory at Murrayfield, preserving Scotland's perfect home record in the tournament following earlier wins over Ireland and Wales.

Known for his reserved demeanour, the emotion was clear in Cotter's voice when he briefly spoke to the BBC after his final match in charge before taking over at Montpellier.

"I’d like to thank the players and everybody for the last three years, it’s been fantastic," he said.

Scotland captain John Barclay hailed Cotter's contribution to the national side and added that his departure played a major role in Scotland's motivation to succeed against the Azzurri.

"He’s had a fantastic contribution to Scottish rugby, he’s built a fantastic culture in the team, he’s a great man," Barclay said.

"We wanted to finish on a high, especially after last week. We really wanted to give the coaching team a good send-off.

"You have a quick turnaround, you’ve got to dust yourself off. Last week wasn’t really what we represent, we’re happy with today. It’s been a reasonable Six Nations."
