Smith to help with Boks' kicking

Cape Town - Franco Smith has been tasked with helping the Springboks with their kicking skills on their year-end European tour.

Smith and Golden Lions defence coach JP Ferreira were last week added to Allister Coetzee's Bok management team, with SA Rugby initially statingvia a press release that Smith would be involved in "backline play and skills".

But Coetzee has now assigned the Currie Cup-winning coach to assist kicking specialist Louis Koen.

Springbok assistant coach Johann van Graan on Wednesday confirmed Smith's role was set out following string of meetings between Coetzee and the rest of the coaching panel.

"Coach Allister is the head coach and he makes all the calls," Van Graan was quoted as saying by Rugby365.

"We have had some in-depth discussion the last few days about roles. Franco will mostly handle the kicking game and bring in one or two new ideas, which have the buy-in of the entire team. JP will focus on defence.”

Mzwandile Stick is the backline coach, while Matt Proudfoot is another coach assigned to forward play.

The Boks start their year-end tour with a clash against the Barbarians at London’s Wembley Stadium (November 5), followed by Tests against England at Twickenham (November 12), Italy in Florence (November 19) and Wales in Cardiff (November 26).
