Bok legend’s son declared brain-dead

Cape Town - Former Springbok lock Moaner van Heerden’s son, Gerhard, has been declared brain-dead after suffering a massive aneurysm.

Gerhard’s brother, Wikus, himself a former Springbok forward, told Netwerk24 that his brother collapsed while exercising on Monday.

He was rushed to hospital and put in an induced coma because of bleeding on the brain.

The family have prepared for the worst and are waiting for life-support machines, which are keeping the 30-year-old Gerhard alive, to be switched off.

Moaner, 64, played 17 Tests at lock for the Springboks between 1974 and 1980.

Gerhard is married to Janika and they have a one-year-old daughter, Lara.
