Cape Town - Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres believes the Primera Division club will win the Champions League one day.
After losing two Champions League finals – 2014 and 2016 – to city rivals Real Madrid, Diego Simeone's men dug deep to beat Los Blancos 2-1 in their semi-final second leg on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the result was not enough to send them to Cardiff as Zinedine Zidane’s charges won 4-2 on aggregate.
And, Torres put on a brave face after the game, saying they believe they will claim Europe’s biggest prize one day.
“We must be happy for the commitment the players showed, for their effort and their work, and for the relationship with the fans,” the 33-year-old Spain international told reporters after the game.
“We have all won tonight, we have taken another step in belief. [Winning the Champions League] is possible,” he said.
“I have witnessed very different stages at Atleti, and this is the beginning of something big. This is not our ceiling, we are in one of the greatest moments of our history.
“Now we have to take another step, on another stage,” said the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker.
Madrid’s win over Atleti on Wednesday set up a dream final with 2015 finalists Juventus.
