Baroka reject surfaces at top Serbia side

Cape Town - Ugandan international and former Baroka FC midfielder Khalid Aucho has reportedly signed for Red Star Belgrade.

The 23-year-old was released by South African top flight side Baroka FC last month, together his international team-mate Geoffrey Massa.

But he now apparently has a new lease on life after several reports claimed he has joined Serbian giants Red Star, who are 27-time league champions as well as former European Cup (Champions League) winners.

"He was hurt when he was released by Baroka because he felt he had not been given enough time to settle down in South Africa," the Citizen quoted a source as saying.

"But he was determined to move on and find a team where he can prove what he is capable of. He went to Red Star on trial and they signed him immediately."

Red Star are regular participants in both the Champions League and the Europa League, but are not currently campaigning in Europe.

Aucho was one of several players who excelled for Uganda at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon last month, and his national team boss, Milutin Sredojevic, is thrilled about the news.

"Coming to coach in Africa, I had a dream to have a player for my childhood team Red Star Belgrade. My dream became reality through Khalid Aucho," the Serbia-born former Orlando Pirates coach tweeted.

Sredojevic also referred to the Aucho as an 'athletic workaholic' player.

Before his move to Baroka in June last year, Aucho made his name as an energetic and strong box-to-box midfielder with 2015 Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia.

In their first season since promotion, Baroka are currently bottom of the table in the South African top division.
