Jonevret a winner, says ex-Bafana midfielder

Cape Town - Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Lance Davids believes new Orlando Pirates head coach Kjell Jonevret has the qualities to succeed with the Buccaneers.

The Swede was announced on Monday morning as the new Pirates head coach and has joined the club on a three-year contract.

Davids, who last played at Ajax Cape Town but spent most of his club career in Europe, was coached by Jonevret during his time at Swedish top flight club Djurgardens IF.

And he feels that Jonevret's temperament, preference for attacking football, and winning mentality should make him well suited for the Bucs job.

"He is a very easy (going) and passive coach, and I think this will be the biggest club he has coached so far," Davids told Soccer Laduma.

"He plays attacking football. When I played for him, he used a 4-3-3 formation, where he played with wingers. This will suit Pirates, that’s their football style, they use wingers in their football patterns," he said.

While Jonevret has not coached in Africa, Davids says he does have an understanding of players from this continent.

"What I can say is that he is a champion coach, he won the league in the past, and knows what it takes to win. He will bring a winning mentality to Pirates.

"He knows African players and African culture. He coached (Siyabonga) Nomvethe and myself, and during his time with Djurgardens he spent time in South Africa on preseason camps."
