Komphela: Mahlambi like Nomvethe

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has praised Bidvest Wits teenager Phakamani Mahlambi after his impressive performance against the Premiership champions.

The South Africa Uner-23 striker tormented the Chiefs back-four all night with his explosive pace and direct running, leaving Siboniso Gaxa on his backside at one point.

Komphela admitted that his defence couldn't cope with Mahlambi during the encounter and compared him to former Amakhosi striker Siyabonga Nomvethe.

"Mahlambi would be difficult to any defender," he said after the 1-0 victory at the Bidvest Stadium.

"He's an exciting player; he reminds you of Nomvethe, who even at 38 years old was difficult to mark.

"When you see a youngster like this coming at you pace, it's exciting for people to watch but a nightmare for any defender.

"Players of this calibre you definitely need cover for because more often than not they would get that one-on-one ahead of you."

Mahlambi, who recently helped South Africa qualify for the Rio Olympics, has scored five goals and registered two assists in the 13 games for the Clever Boys.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
