Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs defeated Premiership champions Bidvest Wits 1-0 with a late Gustavo Paez strike sealing all three points for the Glamour Boys at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
Chiefs were largely on top in the first stanza with Emmanuel Letlotlo, Ryan Moon and Hendrick Ekstein going close for the home team.
After the break, Wits nearly took the lead when Maliele Vincent Pule's cross deflected onto the post. Yet, the game was decided deep into stoppage time when Paez hit the winner.
It was a tight affair in the early exchanges although Emmanuel Letlotlo went close in the first 20 minutes but his header flew just over the bar. Chiefs were showing plenty of intent and it would be Letlotlo who not long after hit the side-netting from Moon's great pass.
It was Ekstein's chance to go close moments later when after a great build up, he fired inches wide with Darren Keet scrambling. Wits were creating very little going forward and it would be Moon who again tested the Clever Boys goal in the 32nd minute.
After the break, the away side began to threaten and substitute Maliele Vincent Pule was nearly the man to break the deadlock. After jinking his way into the area, his driven cross was deflected on to the upright in the 58th minute.
Amakhosi hit back nearly immediately and after another sweeping team move from back to front, George Maluleka was unlucky to see his header well saved by Keet. Chiefs were once again pressing and Ekstein went close with another effort not long after.
However, the pressure would pay off deep into injury time when Paez showed his predatory instincts to fire home the winner and seal all three points.
