SAFA orders Ajax back into Confed Cup

Cape Town - The South African Football Association (SAFA) has ordered Absa Premiership club Ajax Cape Town back into the CAF Confederation Cup.

According to the Cape Times, the Urban Warriors withdrew themselves from the continental competition, citing safety issues as their trip to Angola loomed closer.

Roger de Sa's charges were set to play Sagrada Esperanca in the preliminary round of the competition in Dundo on Saturday, February 13.

However, SAFA has revealed that the "proper procedures were not followed" after meeting with the club's hierarchy before issuing the Cape Town side to fulfil their CAF obligations.

SAFA chief executive Dennis Mumble said that Ajax had no "right to address CAF without the consent of the association" and that club concerns should be addressed through SAFA, who will then approach CAF.

The Urban Warriors CEO Ari Efstathiou has admitted that the Ikamva side are keen to participate in the tournament but the safety of their players remains a concern.

"I can assure you that we have no issue with going to Angola, and we are keen to play in the event. But we have to take the safety of the players into consideration... It's up to SAFA to liaise with the Angolans and make sure that the arrangements are done."
