STATS | Root equals unwanted record with 28-run over

Cape Town - England skipper Joe Root equalled an unwanted record on the final day of the third Test against the Proteas at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

As England fought to take the 10th and final Proteas wicket, South African pair Keshav Maharaj and Dane Paterson made merry, scoring 99 runs for the final wicket - the third-highest 10th wicket partnership in South African Test history.

In conceding 28 runs in the 82nd over, Maharaj made a mockery of Root's decision to bowl himself with the new ball.

The 28 runs comprised of: 4-4-4-6-6-4 byes

Maharaj would eventually be dismissed for 71, one run shy of his all-time best Test innings knock.

Root finished with bowling figures of 29-12-87-4 as he led his side to a comprehensive innings and 53-run victory which gave England a 2-1 series lead heading into the fourth and final Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, starting on Friday, January 24.

Root's 28-run over matched two previous occasions in which a bowler has been plundered for as many in Test history.

West Indian great Brian Lara clobbered Proteas spinner Robin Peterson for 28 at the Wanderers in 2003, while Australian George Bailey had little mercy on England quick James Anderson in 2013.
