Cape Town - A crowd of close to 42 500 moved through the turnstiles at Newlands during the course of the Mzansi Super League.
The highlight was the attendance figure of over 12 000 for the final between the home team, the Cape Town Blitz and the Jozi Stars.
"Throughout the entire tournament, the Blitz Brigade came out in their numbers to support the team, the social media interaction between them and the players played a major part in this success,” said David Brooke Media and Marketing Manager of the Cape Town Blitz.
“For Newlands to have hosted the opening and final match in the inaugural MSL, was truly an honour and from a brand point of view, I believe that the Cape Town Blitz brand has already been imprinted on the hearts of Cape Town cricket fans and what was even more exciting is how we were able to attract new fans to the game whether that was through watching on TV or interacting with us on social media; we can’t wait to take it even greater heights ahead of the next edition of MSL.”
29 936 fans attended the five home matches of the Cape Town Blitz in the league phase in November and December, with the opening match of the tournament against the Tshwane Spartans drawing a crowd of 7 024 on November 16.
On Wednesday, November 21 against the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, a crowd of 4 112 turned out, while the match between the Cape Town Blitz and the Jozi Stars on Tuesday, December 4 attracted 7 050 fans.
On Friday, December 7 the derby against the Paarl Rocks saw 6 250 spectators move through the turnstiles.
The Durban Heat and the Cape Town Blitz clashed on Sunday, December 9 and the attendance figure was 5 500 spectators.
“One of the reasons for the attendance figure in the region of 42 500 was the explosive brand of cricket played by the Cape Town Blitz, as well as the well-known cricket culture of the Cape Town people which has no equal in South Africa,” says Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of the Western Province Cricket Association.
The next match to be played at Newlands is the traditional New Year’s Test, which is set to take place between the Proteas and Pakistan from January 3-7.
