AB's vague 'retirement' plans no longer a mystery

Cape Town - When star Proteas batsman AB de Villiers dropped his retirement bombshell in May of this year, he left the question of playing overseas vague.

Until now.

According to the Cricinfo website, De Villiers, 34, has now confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be part of his international retirement plans "for a few years", and reiterated his desire to play for his franchise, the Titans.

In his retirement speech, De Villiers stated he had "no plans to play overseas", likely referring to taking up a Kolpak deal in the same manner so many of his former team-mates did.

"I will keep on playing IPL for a few years, and I would like to play for the Titans, and help some of the youngsters. But there are no set plans. I haven't been able to say that for a long time," De Villiers told iol.co.za.

"There are some offers on the table from around the world, but it will be nice to wake up and wonder what to do; to be normal."

De Villiers represented the Delhi Daredevils between 2008-2010, and from the 2011 edition to date has been a stalwart in the Royal Challengers Bangalore line-up.

The timing of his retirement also meant that De Villiers would end his career without a Cricket World Cup winner's medal, but he said he had made peace with that fact.

"For a long time, the World Cup was a massive goal," De Villiers said.

"But, in the last few years, I have realised that it isn't realistic to measure yourself purely on what you achieve in that tournament. That will not be the be-all and end-all of my career.

Next year's World Cup in England will take place between May 30 and July 14.
