CSA look to give Graeme Smith permanent role

Cricket South Africa's (CSA) acting director of cricket, Graeme Smith, looks set to be appointed to a permanent role.

That was according to CSA's acting chief executive Jacques Faul, who was speaking during a video media conference on Tuesday that included the former Proteas Test captain.

"We are in final negotiations and hope to make an announcement next week," Faul said.

During the conference, Smith also revealed that the Proteas will require six weeks of preparation before embarking on any future tours.

"We have to review the situation every week, but we estimate we would need around six weeks before any tour," he said.

South Africa are scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka in early June for three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals, but Smith's timetable would appear to make the tour unlikely to happen as it would require a lifting of South Africa's 21-day lockdown as scheduled and the end of all travel bans.

South Africa's next home engagement is a Test and T20 tour of the West Indies, scheduled to start on 15 July, which would require a return to normal procedures in the country by the end of May.

Faul said it was not possible at this stage to predict when cricket activities would resume in the country, but revealed that CSA had the capacity to pay nationally-contracted and franchise players through the 2020/21 season regardless.

"The players will lose out on match fees and win bonuses if there is no cricket," he said.

Faul said a third edition of the Mzansi Super League T20 competition was still planned for November and December.
