Olivier five-for puts Proteas in control at Wanderers

Johannesburg - Duanne Olivier took a third five-wicket haul of the series to give South Africa a 77-run first-innings lead over Pakistan in the final Test at the Wanderers on Saturday.

LIVE: Proteas v Pakistan, Day 2

The match was moving quickly toward a result - and possibly a 3-0 series whitewash for South Africa - with the Proteas starting their second innings before tea on the second day.

South Africa increased their advantage to 102 by the end of that second session, with Aiden Markram 17 not out, Hashim Amla 1 not out, and South Africa 25-1.

Olivier bowled short and fast, as he's done all series, to see Pakistan's brittle batting lineup slump from 169-5 to 185 all out in their first innings. The fast bowler twice took two wickets in an over to return 5-51 in just 13 overs and take his series tally to 21 wickets.

Vernon Philander had 3-43 and Kagiso Rabada 2-41 in Pakistan's first innings as South Africa's all-pace attack kept them in the game after the home team also collapsed in their first innings to be 262 all out.

South Africa also recovered from a careless start to the day in the field.

They dropped four catches and missed a run out chance - and had another injury worry over fast bowler Dale Steyn - before getting going.

Pakistan were 17-2 overnight and nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas frustrated South Africa in the morning, putting on 47 with opener Imam-ul-Haq until Olivier finally sent him packing, off an edge to Theunis de Bruyn at third slip.

Olivier had new batsman Shafiq caught behind three balls later.

Three Pakistan batsmen settled in but none of them went on to make a big score. Opener Imam made 43, Babar Azam 49 and captain Sarfraz Ahmed a rapid 50 off just 40 balls with eight fours.

Sarfraz's dismissal to Rabada began Pakistan's collapse, with the tourists losing five wickets for 16 runs when they looked capable of taking a first-innings lead.

At the start of the day, Steyn saw three of the four dropped catches go down off his bowling and also left the field temporarily holding his right shoulder, the same shoulder he injured seriously in 2016 to leave him sidelined for more than a year.

Steyn returned to the field and bowled again, though, allaying fears of serious damage for South Africa's leading Test wicket-taker.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
