Selection gives Tahir chance to break Omar's record

Cape Town - Imran Tahir's selection in the Proteas' 2019 Cricket World Cup squad will give him the chance to become South Africa's oldest ever tournament player.

Currently that honour belongs to Omar Henry who was 40 years and 39 days when he was picked to play against Sri Lanka in Wellington at the 1992 World Cup.

Henry scored 11 runs off 13 balls and recorded bowling figures of 10-0-31-1 as Sri Lanka won by 3 wickets.

Tahir, as of today, is 40 years and 22 days.

Assuming he plays in the Proteas' opening World Cup clash against England on Thursday, May 30 - exactly six weeks from today - he will be 40 years and 58 days old.

The record for the all-time oldest player ever to play a World Cup match belongs to Nolan Clark of the Netherlands who was 47 years and 257 days when he played against, ironically, South Africa, in Rawalpindi at the 1996 World Cup.

South Africa's Cricket World Cup squad:

Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock (wkt), JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Rassie van der Dussen

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
