Shamsi believes he can do something special at CWC

Cape Town - Proteas spinner Tabraiz Shamsi firmly believes that he can make a difference at next year's World Cup in England.

Shamsi, who is currently playing in the Caribbean Premier League, missed out on the Champions Trophy last year with Imran Tahir and Keshav Maharaj selected as the spinning options. 

Over a year later from the Proteas' group exit, Shamsi is determined to solidify his place in Ottis Gibson's squad for next year's showpiece.

"My ambition is to put in consistent performances and go to the World Cup and do some damage in England," Shamsi told ESPNCricinfo. 

"I don't want to just participate, I want to be somebody who makes a big difference in a big game and win it for South Africa. I firmly believe I will do something special at the World Cup, if I get picked."

The Proteas kick off their 2019 Cricket World Cup campaign against hosts England on May 30.

Shamsi, who took six wickets in the recently concluded Sri Lanka one-day series, admits that South African spinners are making their way through the ranks.

"The spin department in the country looks much better than it has been before at any point," said Shamsi.

"(Shaun) von Berg, and Tahir are leg-spinners. I bowl left-arm wrist spin, Keshav (Maharaj) bowls left-arm orthodox, and there's Senuran Muthusamy with the 'A' team, who also bowls left-arm orthodox.

"Over the years, South Africa have always relied on fast bowlers, and maybe we didn't have as many good spinners back then. But now I see a shift with many good spinners coming up," he said.

The Proteas' next assignment will be against Zimbabwe - where they host 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is - with the first one-layer starting on September 30.
