Steyn 'not medically cleared' for Indian tour - Cricket SA

Cape Town - Cricket South Africa's (CSA) acting director of cricket Corrie van Zyl says that Dale Steyn was not medically cleared for the Indian tour.

The 36-year-old Steyn, who has announced his retirement from Test cricket, took to Twitter on Tuesday to reveal that he had made himself available for the three T20Is in India next month.

Steyn was replying to a Tweet from respected cricket journalist and broadcaster Neil Manthorp, who had confirmed the news that allrounder Chris Morris had not made himself available for selection for the tour.

"I did ... Obviously lost my number in the reshuffling of coaching staff," Steyn wrote cheekily in reply.

When probed on the matter on Tuesday afternoon, though, Van Zyl confirmed that Steyn was not yet fit enough to be considered for selection.

"He is not yet medically ready and our information makes that very clear," Van Zyl said.

Steyn, of course, came home early from the 2019 World Cup with a shoulder injury.

In other fitness news, Van Zyl confirmed that both Vernon Philander (hamstring) and Theunis de Bruyn (back) were on course to recover fully before the start of the three-Test series against India in October.

"Both are on track, but they will have to play one match before the tour to prove that they are fully fit," Van Zyl said.

With no franchise or first-class cricket on offer before the squad leaves for India, this could come in the form of a practice match sometime over the next few weeks.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
