Former Proteas all-rounder announces retirement

Cape Town - Former Proteas all-rounder Johan Botha has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket effective with immediate effect.

The news was announced by Botha's Big Bash League franchise, the Hobart Hurricanes on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Hurricanes, Botha cited "wear and tear on his body and sheer physical fatigue" behind his sudden announcement.

Botha joined Hobart from the Sydney Sixers and finished off his 10-game stint with the Hurricanes on Wednesday evening against his former club, which saw the Sixers win by 9 wickets.

Botha had previously spent three summers with the Adelaide Strikers before joining the Sydney Sixers' squad.

The 36-year-old received his Australian citizenship in 2016.

Botha played for the Proteas in five Test matches, 78 ODIs and 40 T20 Internationals from 2005-2012.

Botha captained the Proteas in 10 ODIs and took the team to the No 1 ranking after they defeated Australia 4-1 away in 2009. He also captained the Proteas in 11 T20s, taking over from Graeme Smith.

Botha also played an amazing 215 domestic T20 matches across 15 years since his 2004 debut in South Africa.
