Cape Town - Construction has began on the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium in India, which will be the largest cricket stadium in the world once completed.
The stadium, which is in Ahmedabad, was completely demolished towards the end of 2015 with plans for an expansion announced.
When completed, the new stadium will have a capacity of 110 000, making it the largest cricket stadium in the world ahead of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which can can accommodate just over 100 000.
Construction on the stadium is expected to be completed within the next two years, according to Business Insider India.
Eden Gardens in India is currently the country's biggest ground, seating over 66 000 spectators.
The Wanderers, the venue for the third Test between the Proteas and Pakistan starting on Thursday, is South Africa's biggest stadium with a capacity of around 34 000.
