South Africa end Women's World T20 with a win

Cape Town - Consolation for the Proteas women came in the form of a comfortable, 30-run victory over Bangladesh as they closed off their participation in the 2018 ICC Women’s World T20 at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Sunday.

They avoid having to take part in the qualifying competition of the next tournament which is due to take place in Australia in March of 2020.

It was another low scoring affair and not the most polished of batting displays as South Africa posted 109/9 at the end of their allotted  overs after being asked to bat first. Today’s score was only their second of 100 runs and over, the first was recorded in their successful tournament opener against Sri Lanka whom they beat by seven wickets.

They got off to a good start with Lizelle Lee and Dane van Niekerk (17) opening the batting. The former looked well on the way to a big score, showing the kind of intent she is known for but was run out on 21 off 13 balls in the third over. Player of the Match Marizanne Kapp top scored with 25 from 19 balls while wickets once again tumbled in clumps.

They went from 93/5 in the 16th over to 107/9 thanks to Bangladesh skipper Salma Khatun who was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/20 in her four overs. Khadija Tul Kubra was also handy, returning with 2/18.

South Africa’s bowlers once again shone, maintaining good pressure and ensuring that the Bangladesh reply was dry of runs. Rumana Ahmed top scored with 34 from 40 deliveries, but lack of support from the rest of the line-up guaranteed the continued rise of the asking rate until it proved impossible to catch up. Bangladesh were restricted to 79/5.
