Cape Town - England's Justin Rose came up short in bid for a Masters green jacket when he lost the first playoff hole to Spain's Sergio Garcia on Sunday.
Rose was looking for his second major after his US Open victory in 2013.
The European Ryder Cup team-mates entered the final day tied for the lead at 6-under par and both posted rounds of 3-under par 69, resulting in a playoff.
It was the first major playoff for Rose, while Garcia had lost his only prior major playoff to Ireland's Padraig Harrington at the 2007 Open Championship.
In the playoff hole, Garcia made a birdie while Rose, the Rio Olympic gold medalist in 2016, could only manage a bogey.
Nonetheless, Rose was gracious in his defeat and congratulated Garcia on Twitter on the "incredible battle" between the two at Augusta National.
He wrote: "Congrats @TheSergioGarcia. Incredible battle out there. Sport in the moment can be tough. But it's just sport. Hope you guys enjoyed it."
Meanwhile, finishing off his final round at Augusta, four-time major champion Ernie Els heaped praise on Rose for his second place finish saying, "Game of inches @JustinRose99 - your time will come! #welldone".
This is the second time Rose has finished runner-up at Augusta after Jordan Spieth took the green jacket in 2015.
Congrats @TheSergioGarcia
