California - Justin Rose looked set to charge on Sunday when he opened the final round of the US Open with a birdie to pull level with Gary Woodland atop the leaderboard.
But the world number four from England's bogey at the second proved the real predictor as Rose staggered to a three-over par 74 and a tie for third place, six shots behind champion Woodland.
"I was right in the tournament," Rose said.
"And then just kept missing in the wrong spot. And the putter wasn't quite as warm today as it was yesterday."
It was Rose's putter that had him challenging to add a second US Open title to go with the one he earned at Merion in 2013, even as he managed to find barely more than half the fairways or greens in regulation in the first three rounds.
He averaged 24 putts per round over the first three rounds, but needed 32 on Sunday, when his five bogeys included three in a five-hole stretch from the 12th through the 15th.
"There's no point in letting it hurt too much," said Rose, who led the first round with a six-under par 65 that equalled the best US Open round ever at Pebble Beach, first achieved by Tiger Woods in 2000 and matched by Woodland on Friday.
"I'm more proud of the fact I even gave myself a chance," Rose added.
"I didn't have my 'A' game this week. And to contend in a major with no game, really, I take the positive from that."
