WATCH: Tiger watches on as Burmester slam dunks for eagle

Southampton - Dean Burmester was struggling against the torrid winds of Shinnecock Hills - similar to his fellow competitors - in the opening round of the US Open on Thursday.

After triple bogeying the 14th hole, things were going downhill for the South African.

Burmester, who is playing in his first Major event, birdied the 16th but then gave it back with a bogey at 17th and then on the final stretch... it happened.

At the par-4 18th hole, the long-driving golfer smashed the ball 411 yards down the fairway, leaving him 103 yards to the flag.

With a wedge in hand, Burmester slam-dunked the ball into the hole to finish on 5-over-par 75 and in a tie for 46th after the opening round.

The South African's stunning shot was not only seen by thousands of spectators crowding the green and television viewers, but by former world No 1 and three-time US Open champion Tiger Woods.

Woods was walking from the 14th hole tee and gave Burmester a wave of approval during his eagle celebrations.
