Semenya broke the 35-year-old record of Ilze Wicksell in the 1 000m women's event, crossing the line in 2:35.43.

Wicksell's record was 2:37.00 set in 1983.

After her record-breaking run in Pretoria, Semenya was congratulated by the former SA record holder.

Wicksell later went on to Facebook to pay tribute to the 800m world champion.

"Last night my 1000m record, which I set in 1983, was broken by @castersemenya800m I am extremely happy for you and well done."

Semenya will be looking to achieve an elusive double at the 2018 Commonwealth Games when she tackles the 800m and 1 500m on the Gold Coast in Australia, which runs from April 4-15.
