Absa Premiership contenders: Who is going to win?

accreditation

Cape Town - With only six games remaining in the Absa Premiership season, four teams have emerged as the most likely to lift the trophy.

Let's take a look at which team is most likely to come out tops when all is said and done.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Mamelodi Sundowns are in good shape going into the last half-dozen games of the season.

Why they will win

They are on top of the league.

They are one point ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates with one game in hand

Coach Pitso Mosimane hasn't said anything newsworthy in the past seven days.

Why they won’t

Even with Pitso's mouth shut, the league leaders, however, have not been in good league form lately, drawing three of their last five games. Last weekend, Sundowns booked their place in this year's CAF Champions League after beating Rwandan side Rayon Sport. This is a tournament most South African sides find difficult to balance with their league exploits.

With that being said, Mamelodi Sundowns are still the likeliest team to win the Absa Premiership. They have an experienced team and coach who has been in this position before.

Remaining fixtures:

Home v Chippa United, Away v Baroka FC, Home v Arrows, Home v Bidvest Wits, A v Maritzburg United, Home v Ajax Cape Town, Away v Celtics

Likelihood of winning: 65%

ORLANDO PIRATES

Orlando Pirates have been the best team in the league this calendar year.

Why they will win

They have scored the most goals in 2018 - 22

They have the best league record in 2018 - WWWWWLWDWW

They beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 (This doesn't add any value to the point but it's always nice to remind Kaizer Chiefs supporters. Disclaimer: I am not an Orlando Pirates fan today)

Why they won’t

Orlando Pirates may have started their resurgence too late into the season. No doubt if they had started their campaign the way they are playing now Pirates would have been on top of the league.

The Buccaneers are second-favourites for the league and Mamelodi Sundowns would only have to slip up twice for them to take advantage.

Remaining Fixtures:

Home v Celtic, Away v SuperSport United, Away v AmaZulu, Home v Bidvest Wits, Away v Cape Town City, Home v Free State Stars

Likelihood of winning: 30%

KAIZER CHIEFS

Over the past three season, Kaizer Chiefs supporters have had more heartbreak than an Adele discography.

Why they will win

In the last stage of their campaign Kaizer Chiefs have favourable remaining games, they play 3 of relegation-threatened teams in their last 6 matches. There are points on offer for Chiefs.

Why they won’t

Their coach is Steve Komphela.

They haven't won a cup in three years.

Their coach is Steve Komphela.

There haven't been many positives in Steve Komphela's third season in charge of Amakhosi.  Kaizer Chiefs have struggled to string together a run of good results and have dropped points against teams they should be winning against.

With 7 points behind and one game more than Sundowns, it's unlikely Kaizer Chiefs will catch up.

Remaining Fixtures:

Away v Free State Stars, Home v Chippa United, Home v Platinum Stars, Away v Golden Arrows, Home v Maritzburg United, Away v Ajax Cape Town

Likelihood of winning: 3%

BET.co.za odds: 7.00

CAPE TOWN CITY FC

Benni McCarthy has exceeded all expectations in his first season as a professional head coach.

Why they will win

Winning the league is all but a mathematical probability for Cape Town City.  However, Benni’s first season in charge has been a good one as they sit in sixth position.

Why they won’t

No one really expected Cape Town City to win the league so being in the conversation is a bonus for them. This won't be the year for them but with new recruits in the offseason and Benni McCarthy at the helm, the Citizens will be a force to be reckoned with next season.

Remaining Fixtures:

Home v Golden Arrows, Away v Maritzburg United, Home v SuperSport United, Away v Polokwane, Home v Orlando Pirates, Away v AmaZulu

Likelihood of winning: 2%

BET.co.za odds: 7.00
