Cape Town - Former EFC lightweight champion Leon Mynhardt has turned his hand to bare-knuckle boxing in the USA with hopes of earning a $100 000 payday.
Mynhardt, 36, competed in the World Bare Knuckle Fighting Federation’s inaugural event in Wyoming last week, dismantling Nick Gonzalez en-route to a second round TKO at the Casper Events Centre.
The South African eased into the semi-finals of a lightweight tournament alongside one-time UFC fighter Robbie Peralta.
Peralta beat another ex-EFC representative in Jay Cucciniello via unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 49-46) over five (two-minute) rounds.
The winner of the tourney will bag $100k in prize money.
Mynhardt, who handed UFC newcomer Don Madge (8-3) all three of his defeats, exited the EFC with a TKO loss to Martin van Staden in June 2017, to go 1-2 against ‘The Punisher’.
‘The Iron Lion’ suffered a fifth straight defeat in MMA to Otgonbaatar Nergui in California in August, dropping his record to 15-11.
