Cape Town - WOW! WOW! WOW!
No other way to describe Sunday, July 14, 2019 other than simply the greatest day of sporting action in history!
Difficult to know where to start, but let's give it a bash...
CRICKET WORLD CUP FINAL
England are the 2019 Cricket World Cup champions following the most un-flipping-believable ODI ever played.
That's right folks, Sunday's clash at Lord's flat-batted the Proteas v Australia '438' match out the record books as the greatest 50-over match ever contested.
In a match there simply were no losers, spare a thought for New Zealand. They looked for all money as though they'd win in 'regulation time'. Then they looked sure winners in the Super Over.
Alas, this morning they wake up as runners-up ... for a second consecutive tournament.
New Zealand's population? 4.8 million. Fewer than the Western Cape. Mull over that for a moment...
In victory England became the first country to win the Soccer World Cup (1966), Rugby World Cup (2003) and Cricket World Cup (2019).
Over to you Eddie Jones and your England rugby side to complete the 'double' later this year in Japan...
WIMBLEDON
Sunday's men's final between world No 1 Novak Djokovic and eight-time champion Roger Federer was one for the ages.
For 4 hours and 57 minutes the two heavyweights of the sport battled it out on Centre Court in the longest final ever played (in the 133rd tournament).
(For the record, Saturday's ladies final lasted 56 minutes).
Federer won every statistical category except the one that mattered most - the match.
When all was said and done, an exhausted Djokovic found himself a five-time Wimbledon champion and a 16-time Grand Slam winner, narrowing the gap on overall leader, Federer, to four Slams.
Bring on the US Open we say!
TOUR DE FRANCE
In the most patriotic moment of the day, South Africa's Daryl Impey took victory in Stage 9 of the Tour de France.
We'll almost forgive him for riding for Australian outfit Mitchelton–Scott. Almost.
The day's 170.5km stage, starting in a town called Saint-Etienne and finishing in one called Brioude, saw a 15-man breakaway establish a sizeable lead that the peloton were happy enough see stay away and contest the finish.
As tired legs took their toll, it was Impey and Tiesj Benoot who proved strongest and duked out the day's honours.
Impey, proudly displaying the South African flag on his jersey as reigning SA road champion (and SA time-trial champion as well), got the better of his Belgian foe, raising his arms aloft in triumph.
Impey became just the second South Africa to ever win a stage on the Tour de France, following in the cleats of Robbie Hunter who won Stage 11 of the 2007 race.
GOLF - PGA TOUR / CHAMPIONS TOUR
There was double delight for South African golf fans as Dylan Frittelli and Retief Goosen emerged victorious on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, respectively.
Playing the John Deere Classic, Frittelli closed with a seven-under par 64, to win by two strokes and book his spot in the field for this week's Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
Frittelli also secured an invite to the 2020 Masters and PGA Championship - as well as a host of other tournaments.
In addition, Frittelli jumped 41 spots in the latest world rankings and moved inside the Top 100 (to 92nd), boosting his Presidents Cup chances in the process.
Goosen, now 50-something, rolled back the clock to win his first tournament - a Major to boot - on the Champions Tour.
Goosen, the US Open winner in 2001 and 2004, finished with back-to-back birdies to win the Senior Players Championship by two shots.
BRITISH GRAND PRIX
More reason to celebrate for British fans as Lewis Hamilton won a record sixth British Grand Prix - his seventh win out of 10 races thus far in 2019.
The victory, over his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, was Hamilton's 80th of his career as he closes in - at high speed - on Michael Schumacher's all-time 91 win record.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
To Senegal for their injury-time own-goal victory over Tunisia to reach the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final, as well as Algeria, who had a stoppage-time Riyad Mahrez free-kick to thank for their 2-1 win over Nigeria in the second semi-final.
To the SA women's netball side who beat second-ranked Jamaica at the Netball World Cup in Liverpool to remain unbeaten after three matches, one of which took place on 'Super Sunday'.
