Jordy Smith crashes out in J-Bay semis

Cape Town - South African surfing superstar Jordy Smith crashed out in the semi-finals of the Corona Open J-Bay at the iconic Jeffreys Bay on Thursday.

Smith progressed to the semi-finals after defeating Australian Julian Wilson in the quarter-finals with 6.33 and 7.10 waves to win by a narrow 0.47 margin.

This after the quarter-finals were delayed after a shark was spotted in the vicinity of the competition zone.

However, in the semi-finals, the 30-year-old Smith lost to another Australian Wade Carmichael.

Smith produced best scores of 6.23 and 7.07, but it wasn't enough to defeat Carmichael, as he progressed to the final with scores of 6.67 and 7.10.

Brazilian Felipe Toledo defeated Carmichael to romp to victory in the final.
