12 SA teams to play overseas?

Cape Town - SA Rugby could in future have as many as 12 teams playing in international competitions.

According to Afrikaans weekly newspaper, Rapport, SA Rugby revealed this during a presentation to the country's 14 provincial unions on July 7.

The allocation of teams could be as follows: FOUR in Super Rugby, SIX in the northern hemisphere and TWO in the USA.

The Cheetahs and Southern Kings are set to join an expanded 'Pro14' competition in Europe, while SA Rugby is also in talks with Premiership Rugby about including four South African teams, including Griquas and the Pumas, in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Another two SA provincial teams could take part in a competition in America, the report further stated.

SA Rugby recently announced that the Cheetahs and Kings would exit Super Rugby and their official participation in the Pro12 is expected to be announced this week.

The Pro12 currently features teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy.
