Cape Town - The Currie Cup is looking for a sponsor after DirectAxis opted not to renew its contract.

DirectAxis co-sponsored the domestic tournament from 2016 to 2018 with Nashua and was the sole sponsor this year.

A spokesperson for SA Rugby confirmed to Rapport that the deal with DirectAxis had ended, but said the tournament would continue with or without a sponsor.

Meanwhile, Craven Week and several other Youth Weeks are also without a sponsor at present after Coca-Cola's reported R10 million-per-year deal ended in 2018 and the tournament will not take place next year unless one is found.

Rapport went on to state that SA Rugby has, reportedly, had interest from several potential sponsors.

SA Rugby is also in the process of negotiating renewals of sponsorship deals of several Springbok sponsors, including headline sponsor, MTN.

The Currie Cup was first contested back in 1892.

The Free State Cheetahs are the reigning champions, having beaten the Golden Lions 31-28 in the final in Bloemfontein earlier this year.
