Mohoje has not played any rugby since sustaining a serious knee injury in September 2018 against Munster in the opening round of that season's PRO14.
The 29-year-old recently started training with the Cheetahs again and was set for a return to action, only to suffer another setback when he felt discomfort in his knee earlier this week.
He underwent a scan this week to determine the severity of the injury and hopes to avoid more surgery.
"After one of our training sessions, I felt discomfort in my right knee and there was some swelling," Mohoje told Netwerk24.
Mohoje played 19 Tests for the Springboks between 2014 and 2018.
The Cheetahs are currently fourth in Conference A of the PRO14, with four wins and four losses and their next encounter is a local derby against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on January 25.
