1995 Bok assistant coach: 2019 RWC win for whole of SA

Cape Town - Former Springbok assistant coach Gysie Pienaar has heaped praise on Rassie Erasmus and the Bok class of 2019 after they won this year's Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Pienaar, who played 13 Test matches for South Africa himself in 1980 and 1981, served as assistant coach to Kitch Christie when the Boks made history in 1995.

The father of another World Cup winning Springbok in Ruan Pienaar, Gysie chatted to Sport24 last week during the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City where he was visiting the SA Hall of Fame.

"What a fantastic moment for South Africa to win the World Cup three times now," he said.

"They didn’t do it for themselves but for South Africa as a whole, so what a fantastic honour for us that we have another World Cup winning team."

Now 64, Pienaar also had kind words for Erasmus, who he coached in Bloemfontein.

"I was Rassie’s coach in the Free State. We’re really proud of him - being an old Free State player and now the Springbok winning coach," he said.

"He's done this big job and won the World Cup and this win wasn’t just for the Boks but it was for the nation of South Africa."
