Wallabies winger joins sevens squad, on standby for RWC

Sydney - Wallabies winger Jack Maddocks has been drafted into Australia's Sevens squad for a tournament in Germany, but remains on standby for the World Cup in Japan, officials said on Sunday.

The Melbourne Rebels flyer narrowly missed out on making the Wallabies 31-man World Cup squad but has been training with them at their camp in Odawara and will remain on call as injury cover.

"Obviously, the ambition is to be playing the World Cup but at the moment that's not the go, so really good opportunity to go have a crack at Sevens," said Maddocks, who will feature at the Munich Sevens next weekend.

He is hoping his stint in Germany will extend to the Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament in Fiji in November before returning to the Rebels for the build-up to the 2020 Super Rugby season.

Australia won the inaugural edition of the Munich Sevens in 2017.
