With Super Rugby suspended, and the proposed domestic replacement competition also on old due to lockdowns, economic pressure will be mounting on the sport's governing bodies.
There will be revenue losses due to broadcasts not taking place and unions will lose out with no money generated through gate earnings.
"It's inevitable (that we take a pay cut) and that's totally understandable considering what's going on in New Zealand," Coles told the New Zealand Herald.
"Rugby players in New Zealand might have to prepare for that but that's just my opinion. You don't want New Zealand Rugby to go under, it would be a bad thing. So hopefully the rugby players around New Zealand can do their part."
NZ Rugby CEO Mark Robinson said meetings this week will determine how his body intends to ride out a dramatic fall in revenue, which will inevitably entail dipping into its significant financial reserves.
NZ Rugby is an incorporated society so is entitled to government aid, something Robinson said will be pursued.
