Pitso backs Baxter for Bafana Bafana success

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has given his full support to Bafana Bafana mentor Stuart Baxter, and says that he hopes they qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon in 2019.

Bafana Bafana are second in Group E with eight points from four matches although they suffered a disappointing goalless draw against Seychelles in their last encounter.

Nonetheless, they trail leaders Nigeria by one point and still have a big opportunity to qualify by getting positive results in their remaining fixtures against the Super Eagles and Libya.

Mosimane, who was in charge of the national side from 2010 until 2012, told reporters: "We have a good coach in Stuart Baxter.

“We support him. I see (Bidvest Wits coach) Gavin Hunt is also supporting him also. This is the national agenda. It's not about Pitso, it's not about Gavin Hunt, it's about the country.

“We want to go to Cameroon. Let's have the team in Cameroon. We have a chance with Libya. We are still in it.

“I told you before that I told the boys (Downs' Bafana players) that they have to win against Seychelles.

“It's important for boys like Lebohang Maboe. We took him from Maritzburg, we put him under stress here. He must see his dream of playing for Bafana Bafana.”

He added: “We will go to Cameroon. I said it earlier, I am still saying it again, we will go to Cameroon. We will go to the AFCON. Let's leave Stuart Baxter to do his job.”

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
