Man United ready to swoop for Spurs defender

Cape Town - Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld could be heading to Manchester United this summer in a deal worth £26 million, reports claim.

United have been chasing a deal for the Belgium international for some time and missed out during the summer after Spurs refused to cash in on the player.

Alderweireld is under contract until the summer of 2020 and Spurs were hoping to convince him to sign a new deal.

That looks highly unlikely so rather than lose him for nothing, Tottenham are prepared to cash in when the window re-opens in the close season.

The central defender has a clause in his current contract allowing him to leave if a club comes in and offers £26 million.

Something United look sure to do.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be handed the United job on a permanent basis and at least one new central defender is on his summer shop list, with Alderweireld top of it.

Barcelona and Juventus are also said to be keen, but the player appears to have set his heart on a move to Old Trafford.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
