Milner remains critical to the Liverpool story

Cape Town - This past weekend was a big one for Liverpool in almost every respect.

However, one of the biggest stories to come out of it centres around James Milner, who made his 500th Premier League appearance during the trip to Bournemouth.

Teammate Andy Robertson said Milner's milestone had every bit to do with the 4-0 drubbing of Bournemouth as anything else that happened on the field on Saturday.

Robertson told journalists that this weekend's performance was for Milner.

Milner, who played at right-back against the Cherries, became only the 13th man to achieve the milestone and the first since Steven Gerrard in April 2015.

"What a career he has had. He has played at the top for all of it and played for some really good clubs," said Robertson.

"He is still the fittest in the squad and is still pushing himself every single day. I'm sure he'll go on and do incredible numbers," added Robertson.

Milner is no spring chicken anymore but the contribution he continues to make to the game inspires his teammates.

"What a fantastic achievement for him. Boys can only dream of that and he has managed to do it at a very high level with a lot of trophies. He'll be hoping to add a few more at this club. Hopefully we can do that.

"Today, it's all about him - the performance and three points are for him because it's a special day for him, his family and all the people close to him. So, fair play to him."
