Amakhosi put 50th anniversary celebration plans on ice

Kaizer Chiefs are committed to helping South Africa overcome the coronavirus as they put all 50th anniversary plans on hold.

The current Absa Premiership leaders were formed on 7 January 1970 and had a number of events planned for 2020.

Talks with a number of international teams were in full swing, but marketing director Jessica Motaung says now is the time to be focusing on helping those in need.

Sport all over the world has been cancelled while South Africa is preparing to go on a nationwide lockdown from midnight on Thursday.

Motaung told the SowetanLIVE: "We have been in discussions with international teams coming to SA to play against us‚ even legends‚ but we engaged internally and said to ourselves let's put all these plans on hold until it is possible to continue."

She added: "It is important that as an organisation we put all plans on hold until things are normalised.

"It is important to do things differently and be more flexible‚ so we are in a holding space in terms of celebrations but when the time is right‚ things will resume.

"Certainly some of the momentum has been lost but at the same time, we understand that there is a bigger problem and there is nothing we can do about it.

"The issue now is focusing on fighting this pandemic and making sure that everyone is safe and healthy.

"We will continue to engage our supporters through our social media platforms and other means of communications."
