Benni earmarked as Middendorp replacement

Cape Town - Cape Town City boss John Comitis says he will be powerless to stop Benni McCarthy leaving the club should Kaizer Chiefs make an approach.

Chiefs are reportedly looking at alternatives to replace coach Ernst Middendorp after a season of disappointment for the Glamour Boys.

The side finished outside of the top eight and also lost in the Nedbank Cup final to National First Division outfit TS Galaxy.

Meanwhile, McCarthy was an Absa Premiership Coach of the Season nominee after guiding the Citizens to a top-eight spot and he helped the team to win the MTN8.

According to reports, Amakhosi management will meet McCarthy in the United Kingdom to hold talks over a possible move.

As such, Comitis denied any knowledge of the talks but admitted he could do little to stop any deal taking place.

He told KickOff: "No, I am not aware of this. But there's nothing I can do.

"It's like something attacking your country, you know. You can counterattack by keeping them away."
