Brockie targets Golden Boot after first goal in 11 months

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns striker Jeremy Brockie says he can challenge for the Golden Boot in 2018/19 after scoring his first goal against Free State Stars in mid-week.

Brockie has struggled for goal-scoring form since signing from SuperSport United in January and had to wait to break his duck against Stars in Wednesday's 3-1 victory.

Currently, four players lead the way in the scoring stakes in the Premiership on four goals with it being shared by Khama Billiat (Kaizer Chiefs), Evans Rusike (SuperSport), Mothobi Mvala (Highlands Park) and Vincent Pule (Orlando Pirates).

Brockie, who struck 54 goals in a three-year stint with United, said: "I always want to get to double figures and challenge for the Golden Boot. I think the top scorer is only on three or something like that.

"I've gone 13 months without a goal but I'm two (three) goals behind the Golden Boot leaders. So that's still the goal for every striker and I'm not different.

"It's been a long time. It's been difficult since I arrived at the club. Obviously, the last couple of months I have not been featuring in the team, so mentally I had to stay strong and keep myself fit, that when the opportunity came I had to make sure I made the most of it.

"I felt pretty confident on Monday when I knew that I will be starting. I told a few people that I feel I can break the ice and what better way to do it than with a volley.

"Now that the first one is out of the way in a competitive game hopefully they will start free-flowing a little bit more, and I can keep myself in the starting eleven and help the club get to the top of the table where it should be."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
