Chiefs lacking combination football - former player

Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs player Gert Schalkwyk reckons he has identified one of the central weaknesses in the current Amakhosi side preventing them from achieving more success.

Schalkwyk, who played as a midfielder for Chiefs between 2004 and 2009 but now plies his trade in Northern Cyprus, reckons Chiefs will start to achieve the results they want once the players have spent more time adopting to the methods of new coach Ernst Middendorp.

Schalkwyk was with Chiefs during Middendorp's first spell in 2005/06, and is confident the German coach will get them playing more like a cohesive unit in time.

"I think the club is lacking combination football, it seems like some players are playing for themselves on the pitch, they need to work together so the club can achieve something," Schalkwyk told Kickoff.com.

"He (Middendorp) is a very good coach who believes in giving every player a fair chance. I had my best time at Naturena during his time. He's like a father figure who can understand any situation a player can face in his career."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
